Basic Controls

Hypno is a dual oscillator video generator with colorizer and feedback controls. Controls that can be modulated are connected with a line to their corresponding CV jack (-5 to 5V). The panel is organized into 2 mirrored sides for 2 oscillators A&B. The centered controls are global.

Note: Hypno has a short startup time where a small cursor will blink in the top-right corner of the screen.

Output

Video is output with a single composite jack. Or the Micro-HDMI plug on the back of the device.

Only one of the output methods works at a time. The composite jack is enabled by default, power up the Hypno with the HDMI plugged in to select this output.

Intro to Buttons@4x.png

Advanced Hypnosis

Button-Patching

Holding a button and then pressing another allows a layer to be patched into another. This allows for more effects and shapes such as oscillator cross modulation & more.

Pages

The Hypno has 3 buttons with a corresponding RGB led. Each button represents a layer of the visual system.

Button 1 : Oscillator A

Button 2: Feedback

Button 3: Oscillator B

Holding down one of these buttons for more than 2 seconds puts Hypno in an alternate state that allows further control over the visuals.

Patching@4x.png

Button-Patching

When in an alt state pressing any of the other buttons will patch the button’s corresponding layer into the other button’s layer. When a connection is active the LED turns green, when inactive it is red.

1 -> 2 : Oscillator A into Master

1 -> 3 : Oscillator A into Oscillator B

2 -> 1 : Feedback Frame into Oscillator A

2 -> 3 : Feedback Frame into Oscillator B

3 -> 1 : Oscillator B into Oscillator A

3 -> 2 : Oscillator B into Master

Entering Pages

When a button is held for more than 2 seconds its corresponding LED turns white. This means that Hypno is in an alternate state and has entered a page.

Pages

Holding a button opens one of 3 pages that represent a part of the engine. Moving any of the controls in this state will control the corresponding parameter.

Upon exiting the page the controls don’t regain their primary function until they are moved again.

Knobs 4 and 2 have a latching return for sensitive parameters. These knobs don’t regain their functionality outside of the page until it physically crosses its old state.

Page A: Oscillator A Control

Pot 1: Drift (Bi-Polar)

Smoothly scrolls the oscillator, slider’s center detent represents 0. Moving the slider up and down scrolls the shape forward and backward respectively.

Pot 3: OSC A to B Patching Gain (Bi-Polar)

Controls amount of modulation going from OSC A to OSC B (only active when corresponding patch is on)

Pot 2: Color

Controls OSC A color offset from root color set by Root Hue Control (Pot 2)

Pot 4: Saturation

Controls saturation for OSC A color, from white to fully saturated

Pot 5: Rotation Self-Modulation (Bi-Polar)

Makes OSC rotation slowly drift by some degree. Pot’s 12 O’Clock up position is 0 Degrees with left and right representing a drift magnitude.

Pot 7: Polar/Fractal Self-Modulation (Bi-Polar)

Modulates the polarization or Fractal Axis if fractal is active. Pot’s 12 o’clock up position is 0 Degrees with left and right representing a drift magnitude.

Pot 6: Fractal Axis Control

Turns the Mirror Axis and changes fractal fold/shape (only active when mirroring is on)

Pot 8: Fractal Amount

Mirrors OSC A shape in many different patterns. From basic mirroring to kaleidoscope fractal madness.

Page B: Oscillator B Control

Note: Controls on this page are a mirrored Page A

Pot 1: OSC B to A Patching Gain (Bi-Polar)

Controls amount of modulation going from OSC B to OSC A (only active when corresponding patch is on)

Pot 2: Color Offset

Controls OSC A color offset from root color set by Root Hue Control (Pot 2)

Pot 3: Drift (Bi-Polar)

Smoothly scrolls the oscillator, the center detent represents 0. Moving the slider up and down scrolls the shape forward and backward respectively.

Finger FB@4x-100.jpg

Page FB: Feedback Control

Pot 1 & 3: Feedback to OSC Patching Gain (Bi-Polar)

Controls amount of modulation going from feedback frame back into the corresponding oscillator (only active when corresponding patchpoint is on/green)

Pot 2: Hue Shift

Introduces a hue shift effect around the edges of shapes, useful for introducing extra gradient into the feedback frame.

Pot 4: FB Zoom

Zooms the feedback frame in and out, digital notch in the center is 1:1, left is out, right is in. Makes feedback appear deeper. When feedback goes off frame the frame is mirrored and tiled, resulting a continuous picture and greater complexity on the edges.

Pot 5: FB Rotation

Rotates feedback frame. Digital notch in the center is 0 rotation with left and right rotating the frame accordingly. Introduces rotating tunneling and vortex like patterns.

Pot 6: FB Rotation Modulation

Rotates feedback rotation continuously. Digital notch in the center is 0 modulation with left and right rotating the frame continuously. Great for slowly exploring variations of fb rotation.

Pot 7 & 8: FB X and Y offset

Offsets feedback frame. Digital notch in the center is no offset, with extremes being a mirrored frame on the axis. You can use this combined with the zoom control to dial in a vanishing point and create the illusion of 3D.

Preset@4x-100.jpg

Preset System

Each of Hypno’s buttons represent a preset slot. Holding 2 of Hypno’s buttons lets you access the slot on the 3rd button. Presets save all of Hypno’s controls in all of the pages.

Save: Hold the 3rd button and you will see the the LEDs light up left to right. When all the LEDs turn green, the preset had been saved.

Load: Tap the 3rd button to recall the last stored preset.

Pro Tip: Save a simple starting point (or even the init patch that loads when Hypno starts) into one of the slots to quickly reset all of Hypno’s values.

MIDI MAP (CH 16)

Plugging in a USB device via the front USB port allows Hypno to act as a MIDI Host. This often requires a USB micro to A adapter (any adapter will do this is a very simple cable).

NDI Output (Spout/Syphon)

OBS Tutorial Video

Connect Hypno via the front USB port to a computer. You should now be able see a Hypno source in your target application such as Resolume, Touch Designer or other NDI Reciever.

If your application supports Syphon or Spout (Such as vsynth in Max MSP) this feed can be converted to Spout or Syphon with below software solutions:

Video is streamed at a max of 720x480 or at the size of your currently attached screen via HDMI or Composite. NDI and a hardware output ( HDMI OR Composite) can be used simultaneously.
